Legislation to End Discriminatory Hiring Practices Passes Senate Committee

PHOENIX, ARIZONA— Senate Majority Leader Janae Shamp is working to restore merit-based opportunities in Arizona by removing any influence of discriminatory Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) ideologies when making hiring decisions in the workplace. A bill prohibiting hiring policies that prioritize sex, race, skin color, and sexuality over qualifications, experience, and competence passed out of the Senate Regulatory Affairs & Government Efficiency Committee today with bipartisan support.

SB 1584, sponsored by Majority Leader Shamp, prohibits the State of Arizona, or any political subdivision, from establishing hiring policies that prioritize DEI. This means employers would be banned from using tax dollars to implement these radical programs in job postings, required trainings, or any manner that would deprive an individual from an employment opportunity when their skin color, sex, sexual preference, or race doesn't meet an employer's preference. SB 1584 also empowers the Attorney General, county attorneys, or any concerned citizen to file for declaratory relief or damages in cases where the merit-based hiring standards are violated. This measure serves as the catalyst to reforming workplace policies to be based on values of inclusivity, unity, and respect for all Americans.

"Merit-based hiring ensures that the most qualified individuals are the candidates who are selected for positions within our government, ultimately leading to better services for the people of Arizona," said Majority Leader Shamp. "We are committed to eliminating policies that prioritize anything other than talent and hard work. Senate Republicans are working to support President Trump's efforts by removing illegal DEI practices from government, with an emphasis on returning to a system where merit-based opportunities are prioritized above all else. I look forward to seeing this commonsense bill continue to advance through the legislature."
