Senate Judiciary & Elections Committee Chair Rogers Champions Improvements to Stolen Valor Bill SB 1424, Applauds Senate Passage to Protect Arizona's Veterans
PHOENIX, ARIZONA— A bill to honor Arizona's veterans, by cracking down on stolen valor, is now headed to the Governor after Senator Wendy Rogers facilitated improvements to the policy resulting in bipartisan support from the Senate today.
Formerly known as HB 2030, the new and improved "stolen valor bill," SB 1424, reflects several weeks of conversations and compromise. The bill holds accountable individuals who fraudulently claim veteran status and awards for personal gain. It now classifies impersonating a veteran as a class 6 felony.
"As a career veteran myself, I want to do everything in my power to protect the brave men and women, who've selflessly served our great nation, from criminals who profit off their sacrifices," said Senator Rogers, Chair of the Senate Committee on Judiciary & Elections. "I'm honored to have facilitated meaningful changes on an earlier version of the stolen valor bill, so that this legislation can now better provide a practical solution for holding bad actors accountable. The compromises made by the bill sponsor helped get this legislation across the finish line. The final product of SB 1424 reflects a team effort to ensure military imposters are held accountable. I look forward to the Governor taking appropriate action by signing this bill into law, and I will continue to proudly advocate for our veterans in any way that I can."
