Senate Republicans Announce New Leadership Team

to Serve Majority Caucus

PHOENIX, ARIZONA— Senate Republicans are ready to tackle major issues facing our state with a new leadership team, selected by the Majority Caucus during a post-election organizational meeting this afternoon.

Senate President Warren Petersen (R-14) of Gilbert will remain Senate President for the second consecutive term. He was first elected to the Legislature back in 2012 for the State House of Representatives, where he served for six years. He was later elected to the Senate where he has also served six years and will begin his fourth term in January. President Petersen, a third-generation Arizonan, will continue his duties as the primary leader of the Senate, presiding over legislative sessions and ensuring senators abide by procedural rules. Aside from his duties as a state legislator, President Petersen has worked in the real estate industry for more than two decades.

Senator T.J. Shope (R-16) of Coolidge will remain Senate President Pro Tempore. His legislative leadership skills and incredible knowledge of Arizona issues will once again strengthen the Majority Caucus as he serves alongside President Petersen. In addition to serving in the same leadership role during the previous two sessions, Senator Shope served as Chairman of the Health and Human Services, Vice Chairman of the Committee on Natural Resources, Energy & Water, and as a member of the Committee on Elections. Senator Shope previously served as Speaker Pro Tempore from 2017-2021 before his election to the Arizona State Senate in 2020.

Senator Janae Shamp (R-29) of Surprise is named as the next Senate Majority Leader in her second term as an Arizona legislator. Senator Shamp has served as Vice Chair of the Committee on Health & Human Services as well as a member of the Committee on Government and Committee on Finance & Commerce. Prior to her election to the Senate, Senator Shamp worked as a dedicated Perioperative Nurse Manager in operating rooms across Arizona. Her duties as Majority Leader will include being the principal leader of Senate Republicans on the Senate floor, serving as the lead speaker during floor debates, scheduling the daily calendar and working to promote the legislative priorities of Senate Republicans.

Senator Frank Carroll (R-28) of Sun City West is named as the next Senate Majority Whip. Senator Carroll served in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2019-2023 and was first elected to the state Senate in 2022. Senator Carroll has served as Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation, Technology & Missing Children and as a member of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources, Energy & Water. Prior to his time at the Legislature, Senator Carroll had a career as a subject matter expert in areas such as vehicle computer management, emission systems and their environmental impact, vehicle safety systems, and electric vehicle technology. His duties as Majority Whip will include assisting the Majority Leader in securing votes on legislation considered critical to the Majority Caucus.

Opening day of the 57th Legislature, first regular session, will be on Monday, January 13, 2025.
